This classic Virginia hike features on of the state's most striking waterfalls and the colors of the trees resemble an apple orchard, which is why it was named Apple Orchard Mountain. The highlight of the trail is the ’ Apple Orchard Falls with a very nice viewing area constructed by the Forest Service in Favorites: Apple Orchard Falls The Cascades Carvin Cove/Hay Rock Mt. Rogers/Grayson Highlands.

Apple Orchard Falls Trail: This trail begins at an elevation of feet on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Sunset Field Overlook near milepost It leads in a northwesterly direction, crossing into the Jefferson National Forest at mile, crossing the Appalachian Trail at. Most hikers visit the falls from the Sunset Fields Overlook, where the Apple Orchard Falls Trail descends feet in elevation over miles, for a mile round trip. The easiest hike to the falls requires a drive along forest service roads (rough but can be driven on by cars), to the end of Apple Tree Road (see directions below).

Crabtree Meadows is an open area with crab apples and apple trees, across the road from the parking lot. In the ’s, several families lived in this area, which once included a saw mill.

Now it is a popular primitive camping spot, with access to the Appalachian Trail which is only miles from the parking lot up the steep gravel fire road (FDR/VA).
